Building begins on new Harbour Landing faculty in Regina, with anticipated 2027 opening

The southwest Regina neighborhood has struggled with overcrowding since its first elementary faculty opened in 2017. High enrolment shortly pressured the varsity to transform shared areas, similar to libraries and science labs, into lecture rooms.

The new joint-use facility, a partnership between Regina Public Schools and Regina Catholic Schools, is scheduled to open in fall 2027. It will serve as much as 500 public faculty college students and 350 Catholic faculty college students, and also will embrace 90 new child-care areas.

At a Tuesday media occasion to mark the beginning of building, Premier Scott Moe mentioned the challenge displays each capital and classroom investments by his Saskatchewan Party authorities.

“Since we’ve had the honour of forming government, we have built or announced or planned 115 schools,” Moe mentioned. “Thirty-one of those, this being the 31st, are right here in Regina, one of the fastest growing communities that we have in the province.” 

The faculty was initially authorised in 2020, after a 2017 research predicted predicted the present elementary faculty would exceed capability by 130 per cent in 2019.

This week, Education Minister Everett Hindley acknowledged the challenge has confronted delays.

“It’s not a normal timeline. This one has taken a little bit longer,” Hindley mentioned. “Part of the reason was working closely with the City of Regina and school divisions around growth in this area.”

The whole capital price is $65.9 million, with the City of Regina contributing $4 million towards land and web site servicing, Hindley mentioned.

Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski mentioned the beginning of building was a day “very long-awaited.”

“This community has really shown how much they value strong schools,” he mentioned. “Together we’re not just building a school — this is a future filled with faith, hope, and possibility.”
