‘I AM A MAN’ civil rights pictures exhibit opens in Las Cruces

A robust pictures exhibit documenting a pivotal decade within the civil rights motion is opening on the Branigan Cultural Center.

“I AM A MAN: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1960–1970,” will probably be on show from Sept. 2 by Oct. 18 within the Shannon Room.

The exhibition paperwork the evolution of the motion throughout the American South throughout a time of sweeping social change. It options not often seen images taken by amateurs, native photojournalists and internationally identified photographers.

The Sixties marked a turning level within the struggle for racial justice. Public areas have been desegregated, and African Americans secured voting rights by grassroots organizing and federal laws. This visible assortment highlights how the motion grew to become woven into each day life in Southern communities.

The photos embrace protestors carrying indicators with messages like “I Am a Man” and people sitting at segregated lunch counters.

The exhibit was curated by William Ferris, a Southern folklorist, writer and historian, together with a workforce of researchers who sought out images captured by native activists and journalists on the entrance traces of change.

“I AM A MAN” is a program of ExhibitsUSA, a nationwide division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Endowment for the Arts. It has been tailored from an exhibition initially produced for the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier, France, by the Center for Study of the American South on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Branigan Cultural Center is positioned at 501 N. Main St. and is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday by Friday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
