Rabid bat discovered close to swimming space at Buttermilk Falls

ITHACA, N.Y. — According to the Tompkins County Whole Health, a bat has been discovered with rabies situated roughly 50 meters away from the swimming space on Lower Buttermilk Gorge Trail, at Buttermilk Falls.

On Friday, August 22 the bat was decided to be rabid by the New York State Rabies Laboratory. Earlier that day, the bat was reportedly first seen on the bottom appearing uncommon round 11:30 a.m., and was later eliminated by Park Staff round 1 p.m.

Tompkins County Whole Health reminds everybody to keep away from contact with any unfamiliar cats or canines and any wild animals. All cats, canines and ferrets will need to have preliminary rabies vaccinations administered no later than 4 months of age. Keep vaccinations present!

• All animal bites or scratches.
• Any human or pet contact with saliva or different probably infectious materials (mind tissue, spinal tissue, or cerebro-spinal fluid) of untamed animals or any animal suspected of getting rabies.
• All bat bites, scratches, or any mere pores and skin contact with a bat, or a bat in a room with a toddler, or sleeping or impaired particular person.
