“During our inspection of maternity services, our inspection team found this service had also made improvements since our previous inspection, but again, more work was still needed to keep people safe.
“Leaders had failed to identify and mitigate certain risks of harm that people faced. Staff didn’t provide everyone with timely care, and some people experienced delays in being triaged, particularly overnight.
“However, staff treated people with kindness and compassion. They supported people and their families and involved them in decisions and discussions about their treatment.
“In services for children and young people, people told us they were pleased with the care they received. Children, young people and their families shared their positive experiences of using the service, and the inspection team observed staff treating people with care, dignity and compassion.
“Staff assessed people’s needs regularly to make sure they were receiving effective care and treatment and involved people and their families in care planning.
“Staff and leaders at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital should be encouraged by the improvements we found at this inspection. We have told the trust where it needs to make urgent improvements, and we will continue to monitor the services to check their progress and ensure people are safe while this happens.”
