Season of Creation begins | The Church of Scotland

Running from Monday 1 September, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, to Saturday 4 October, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, the Season of Creation encourages Christians of all denominations to interact in prayer and motion for the safety of the surroundings.

The annual celebration sees Christians across the globe contemplating the wellbeing of the planet in addition to celebrating the pure world.

This 12 months’s theme is ‘Peace with Creation’.

First established in 1989 when the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church acknowledged there must be a day of “protection of the natural environment”, the Season of Creation has since gained assist from different church buildings in addition to the European Christian Environmental Network and the European Ecumenical Assembly.

Rt Rev Rosie Frew has written a prayer marking the Season of Creation:

Creator God,
Let there be peace on earth
One world
Living in concord
Caring for each other
Delighting within the wonders round us
Tending your creation

Let there be peace on earth
And but…
Ours is a world at battle
A world of enmity and hatred
A world of greed and destruction
A world of starvation and homelessness
God, forgive us

Let there be peace on earth
And let it start with you and me
Our phrases and actions
Our priorities and passions
Our love for our neighbours close by and much away
Our take care of land and air and sea
God, assist us

Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be
A world of justice and pleasure
A world of equity and respect
