Burnaby honours National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The City of Burnaby is dedicated to working with the 4 host Nations and the Indigeous inhabitants who reside in Burnaby to advance reconciliation by constructing and sustaining constructive relationships and meaningfully do that vital work collectively. We respectfully acknowledge that the City of Burnaby is situated on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples. Each Nation has distinct histories and distinct conventional territories that totally or partially embody the town.

Throughout September, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City hosts a number of occasions and actions for the neighborhood to be taught in regards to the historical past and tradition of Indigenous Peoples. It’s a possibility to acknowledge the tragic and painful historical past of residential faculties, and to have interaction within the therapeutic and reconciliation course of.

Truth and Reconciliation for Newcomers (September 9)

Third Annual City of Burnaby’s Hope and Health Community Camp (September 13)
Children and youth can participate in a one-day ReconciliACTION soccer camp. The camp options cultural teachings, coaching classes with coaches, mentors and conventional information keepers. It’s a fun-filled day of soccer expertise, drills and challenges for teenagers of all soccer talents. It’s a possibility for youngsters and youth to have interaction within the path to reconciliation.

Explore artwork by Indigenous artists inside City Hall from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection, and pick-up a free commemorative pin designed by Ryan Johnston, an interdisciplinary artist of combined Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Celtic descent. The artworks on show discover the realities and impacts of residential faculties on Indigenous peoples, alongside depictions of Indigenous resurgence that has survived regardless of colonial hurt. The public can even contribute to the show by creating an orange shirt craft and dropping it off on the City Hall Information Desk. 

Incorporated into the show are books written by Indigenous authors from the Burnaby Public Library collections. Books by Indigenous authors present a possibility to study various Indigenous cultures, histories and views which are sometimes marginalized or misrepresented in mainstream narratives. These tales present insights into the experiences of Indigenous peoples, difficult stereotypes and selling a deeper understanding of reconciliation.
