Olympic swimmers win $4.6M settlement in antitrust lawsuit

Olympic swimmers who challenged the game’s governing physique in a U.S. court docket are set to get a multi-million greenback settlement for athletes who took half in a breakaway collection.

“World Aquatics is setting up a fund of $4.6 million that will be distributed to swimmers who signed contracts to compete at the International Swimming League (ISL) event in Turin in 2018 and in the 2019 ISL season,” the governing physique stated Monday in an announcement.

Three Olympic and world champion swimmers – Katinka Hosszu of Hungary and Americans Tom Shields and Michael Andrew – filed an antitrust swimsuit in California in 2018 after the governing physique then referred to as FINA tried to cease the ISL working exterior its management.

The Lausanne-based governing physique had at first threatened to ban swimmers who competed within the Ukraine-backed occasion, which aimed to pay increased prize cash.

The rival occasion pushed the governing physique to extend prize cash for athletes at its personal world championships and World Cup conferences.

“The settlement fund will ensure swimmers are more than fully compensated following the 2018 and 2019 ISL seasons,” World Aquatics stated Monday, including it “looks forward to the court’s approval of the settlement.”

The ISL collection was paused in 2022 in fallout from the Russian army invasion of Ukraine.

World Aquatics president Husain al Musallam stated most of the swimmers who dedicated to the ISL “were badly let down.”

“However, I am pleased that we are finally able to step in and provide this significant sum of money for the swimmers,” he stated in an announcement.

A separate lawsuit by ISL “remains pending,” World Aquatics stated.
