Marshall artist’s Helene assortment is ‘images to be remembered’

MARS HILL – Sarah Jones Decker’s tintype portraits documenting Marshall and Madison County in its Tropical Storm Helene rebuild grew to become a recognizable image for Marshall’s resilience and robust sense of neighborhood after the storm.

Decker chose the title because it provides snapshots of the continued rebuild in the weeks and months following Helene, rather than the days immediately following the storm.

“It’s like this little pocket of time of the in-between time the place folks had sufficient time to spend an hour with me. It’s not the month after. It’s two and three and 4 and 5 months later,” she stated.

The tintype process

Decker first began working with wet paint photography while she was a freshman in high school in 1995 in Virginia. Four months before Helene, Decker also enrolled in a tintype class.

A subset of wet plate collodion photography, tintypes were popularized during the Civil War. The portraits are produced by pouring collodion directly on a thin sheet of blackened metal, which is then immersed in silver nitrate to make it light sensitive and able to produce an image. The entire process needs to be completed before the plate dries out.

Tintypes are a labor-intensive and challenging medium, Decker said.

“My aim was to apply for 2 years, after which ultimately {photograph} the Mermaid Parade,” she stated.

But after Helene, with slightly encouragement from associates, Decker knew it was time to place the old-time methodology to make use of.

So, practically 30 years after first experimenting with moist plate collodion images, Decker went to work within the fashion.

Decker stated she was inspired to doc the Marshall rebuild by Lauren Rutten, a Marshall photographer who owns artwork studio Milkhouse Arts.

“She came out to my house, and we both as artists were feeling overwhelmed,” Decker stated. “We kind of had a crying session in the forest, and she said, ‘You just have to go for it. We’ve just got to make art and do what we can. If it helps us, it helps others.'”

Decker constructed the darkroom the subsequent day and drove to Marshall.

Decker stated she felt the problem of working in moist plate images served because the bridge that allowed her to be so concerned with making the work.

“I think if I was just down here photographing and crying and approaching it the way I’ve always approached it, I don’t know if I would have taken it as serious as I did,” she stated. “The challenge of working in that medium, on top of the challenge of the heartbreak in the communities, the destruction, it was something that allowed me to keep coming back down here. It wasn’t making work with the training wheels on. You’re in it.”

“I’ve never made work that made my viewers feel such an emotional reaction,” she stated. “I don’t feel like I’ve ever made such personal work.”

Decker recalled assembly with Zuma Coffee proprietor Joel Friedman, the topic in one of many first pictures Decker took within the assortment.

“We were back in the kitchen, and we took it, and we had tears in our eyes,” Decker stated. “It was just so emotional and beautiful. I put it up on Facebook and people told me that my Facebook post made them cry. You think about how we’re removed many degrees, but it still had that emotional effect.”
