Leading councillors at Tendring District Council (TDC) have right this moment (Friday, 12 September) backed a proposal for a way native authorities in Essex might be reshaped—selecting a mannequin that prioritises native identification, sturdy partnerships, and sustainable companies.
The resolution follows an invite from the Government for councils throughout Essex to submit proposals for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), aimed toward changing the present two-tier system—Essex County Council and district councils—with a streamlined unitary mannequin.
After reviewing a number of choices, TDC’s Cabinet has endorsed a proposal for 5 new unitary authorities throughout Essex. Under this mannequin, Tendring could be grouped with Colchester and Braintree—areas with shared geography, neighborhood hyperlinks, and established working relationships.
The Council’s advice is predicated on 5 key ideas:
“This recommendation reflects the majority view of this council, informed by cross-party discussions and a careful weighing of the evidence,” mentioned Councillor Mark Stephenson, Leader of Tendring District Council:
“We believe the five-unitary model best meets the principles we’ve set out and offers the most local, responsive, and sustainable solution for our communities.
“Ultimately, the decision rests with Government, but it’s vital that Tendring has a clear voice in shaping the future – and that we are ready to grasp the opportunities that change may bring, whichever option Government chooses.”
Options for 3, 4 and 5 new unitaries are being proposed and shall be submitted to Government as a part of the broader Essex response to the LGR invitation. Details of the choices will be seen at the Greater Essex LGR hub website.
A Government-run session will happen later this 12 months earlier than a last resolution is predicted in Spring 2026.
