“My photographic inspiration lies in the great diversity of cultures, customs, and landscapes that Peru has to offer,” Edson Vera.

Edson Vera, a photographer from Lima, Peru, captures the soul of his nation via the lens of his digital camera. From the bustling streets of the capital to the distant fantastic thing about Peru’s rural landscapes, Edson’s work is deeply rooted within the on a regular basis life, traditions, and struggles of his folks.

With a eager eye for documentary and avenue pictures, Edson’s pictures mirror a humanist imaginative and prescient that highlights the contrasts of Peru—its wealthy tradition, vibrant festivals, and the environmental challenges it faces. Through his pictures, Edson invitations us to discover the complexity, magnificence, and resilience of Peru—one picture at a time.

“Peru is a country with diversity and history, with a variety of customs throughout the entire country,” Edson shares. “It is also a religious country, and during its holidays, each region fills the streets with colors and the mysticism that emanates from the most devout. However, it is also a country immersed in various political and social problems. A country where the economic gap between rural and urban areas is vast, a country in constant struggle for equality and justice.”

Lima, the capital, “is a chaotic city where people live in a rush,” Edson tells us. “A city full of social contrasts, but also full of hardworking people.” These complexities and contrasts gasoline Edson’s photographic inspiration.“Over the years, I’ve encountered very kind people, proud of their roots. I believe that even in chaos, it is possible to capture order and beauty.”

Edson’s journey with pictures started at 19, in 2013, when he received his first digital camera. At first, he used it primarily to seize the landscapes exterior Lima, primarily throughout mountain hikes. “I used photography to show the landscapes I visited, without giving much importance to studying photography—just as a personal hobby.”

Over time, his curiosity grew, and he started to see his digital camera as a device for speaking rural Peruvian life. “I began to take interest in the customs and life outside of Lima, though I still didn’t give photography the importance or value it deserved in terms of learning.”

It wasn’t till 2021, in the course of the pandemic and lockdown, that Edson determined to review pictures extra significantly. “I no longer needed to leave the capital to find beauty; I could find it in the everyday life of my city—in the chaos, the contrasts and colors, and in its people,” he displays. This choice, which started as a technique to fill the isolation of the lockdown, reworked his perspective and his photographic method.

Edson’s household enjoys the humanities. His older sisters are proficient at drawing, and whereas he aspired to be taught the identical ability, he humorously admits, “I’m really bad at it.” Instead, pictures turned his medium of expression. In 2021, inspired by his mom, he enrolled in a one-year pictures course in Lima, though he was unable to complete it.

“I’ve also watched photography tutorials on digital platforms and I’ve learned photography mostly through observation and practice—especially by studying the works of the classic masters of photography.”

For Edson, pictures is extra than simply capturing pictures. “Photography is a connection between my heart, the subject, and their environment, based on respect and dignity. It is my way of drawing—a completely immediate sketch capturing what I feel. Photography is memory and identity, allowing me to immortalize my country’s customs.”

His photographic type has advanced into a mix of documentary and avenue pictures, with a humanist imaginative and prescient. “Photography is now the perfect excuse for me to wander,” he says. “That’s why my photographic style is based on documentary and street photography with a humanist vision. I’m also passionate about nature and landscape photography, as that’s where I started.”

However, one problem Edson faces in his work is that visible arts usually are not at all times given the worth they deserve in Peru. “But I believe the most rewarding experience is that you can find stories in every corner of the country.” Whether via formal analysis or spontaneous exploration, Edson’s method to pictures is usually unplanned, guided by the inspiration of the second.

“I generally don’t follow a plan—I let myself be guided by the inspiration of the moment, aiming to find and show emotions that reflect what I feel.”

One {photograph} that stands out in Edson’s journey is one he took of Mr. Linorio Novoa, a park ranger and tour information on the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve within the Peruvian jungle. “Mr. Linorio is person with deep knowledge and love for the reserve and its native communities for many years. My admiration for his wisdom and work is what makes this photograph special to me,” Edson shares.

Edson’s private work typically delves into deeply emotional and culturally vital moments. For the previous two years, he’s been engaged on a photograph sequence on the Nueva Esperanza Cemetery. “On November 1st, All Saints’ Day, the cemetery fills with people, music, flowers, and memories. The emotions experienced in that place are incredible, and that’s what I aim to convey through the series.”

Looking forward, Edson is planning a mission targeted on environmental and social points. “Peru is a country of mountains and glaciers that, for many years now, has been experiencing glacier retreat due to global warming—affecting both the environment and nearby communities.”

Through this mission, he hopes to lift consciousness concerning the impression of local weather change, “from a more documentary perspective, told by the Andean communities themselves and the challenges they face.”

Reflecting on his experiences in 2024, Edson mentions how vital his journeys to northern and southern Peru had been for his pictures. “Also, connecting with other documentary and street photographers, sharing experiences and their perspectives on observing,” he provides.

Finally, Edson gives recommendation to rising photographers: “Every photographer has their own path to walk, so never compare yourself to others. Work on things slowly and deeply. Walk and feel a lot. Look at a lot of photos, but also explore other artistic expressions. And above all, take a lot of photos—make the world of photography full and glorious.”
