2 Alabama women suing Roblox declare sexual predators discovered, groomed them on gaming platform

A second suit filed Tuesday alleges another girl from Dale County, now 12-years-old, met multiple sexual predators on Roblox who convinced her to send them sexually explicit images of herself through Discord in exchange for the promise of Robux, the virtual currency used by Roblox players inside the game.

Both lawsuits seek monetary damages as well as “nonmonetary injunctive relief.”

Roblox has announced multiple updates to its safety policies and procedures this year, including this announcement on September 3.

“Today, we’re announcing an ambitious plan to expand age estimation to all Roblox users who access our on-platform communication features by the end of this year. Using a combination of facial age estimation technology, ID age verification, and verified parental consent, this process will provide a more accurate measure of a user’s age than simply relying on what someone types in when they create an account. With this information, we’ll also launch new systems designed to limit communication between adults and minors unless they know each other in the real world. These added layers of protection will help provide users with access to developmentally appropriate features and content. We hope this move sets a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow.

We’re taking this step as part of our long-term vision as a platform for all ages. We expect that our approach to communication safety will become best practice for other online platforms, whether lawmakers pass laws requiring age verification for all platforms in the future or not.”

WBRC reached out to both Roblox and Discord seeking a response to these lawsuits. We are awaiting a reply from Discord.
