For centuries, the first means that astronomers studied outer area was via sight. But simply ten years in the past, scientists efficiently established a method to ‘pay attention’ to our cosmos – detecting gravitational waves created by large cosmic occasions that occurred billions of sunshine years away.

But what do these gravitational waves inform us? What occasions are they generally brought on by? And what might they inform us about our universe? Short Wave host Regina Barber and NPR science correspondent Nell Greenfieldboyce dive in.
