Soweto Gospel Choir begins Secrest Series 2025-26 season

The Secrest Artists Series opens its season on Thursday, September 25^th with the multi-GRAMMY® and Emmy® Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir performing their live performance titled “PEACE.” The Choir will carry out a joyful program of South African freedom songs, conventional spirituals and a few classics. The inspirational live performance will even function the spirited music of Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen and extra!

Formed in 2002, the Choir was created to have a good time the distinctive energy of African gospel music and shortly established itself as a gaggle that’s “undeniably synchronized, appears unshakable, and simultaneously expresses universality and individuality” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Heralded by Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Barack Obama, and Oprah Winfrey, Soweto Gospel Choir excites audiences worldwide, uplifting the soul and spreading pleasure by means of its earthy rhythms, wealthy harmonies, good costumes, and infectious spirit. Join us at 6:40 pm for a pre-concert speak from the Wait Chapel stage given by Dr. Claire Crawford, Assistant Professor within the Department of Politics and International Affairs and the Program of African American Studies. In her speak, “Amandla!: Singing Truth and Freedom,” she explores South African freedom music as a robust drive of resistance and remembrance, displaying how voices raised in track have carried reality and liberation throughout generations.
