Hearth-damaged Scroby Sands wind turbine getting eliminated

Work is underway to take away a wind turbine off the Norfolk coast that was catastrophically broken by hearth.

Turbine T06 on the Scroby Sands wind farm caught hearth on 15 August 2023, and its generator, gearbox and turbine blades had been destroyed.

The lack of the turbine prompted six others to be taken out of fee for a few week till the cables may very well be remoted.

In a press release, wind farm proprietor RWE mentioned: “A decision has been taken to deconstruct the non-operational turbine… No works will be undertaken on the foundation at this point in time.”

Scroby Sands was one of many UK’s first offshore wind farms, opening in 2004, 2.5 kilometres off the coast of Great Yarmouth.

It was constructed to generate 60 megawatts of electrical energy, ample to energy 48,000 households.

The firm mentioned it had the required licensing agreements from the Marine Management Organisation and The Crown Estate for the elimination, and that notices to mariners had been served.

In a press release on RWE’s web site, it mentioned: “A fire in the nacelle of a turbine in the Scroby Sands Wind Farm array in August 2023 resulted in the total loss of operation of that turbine, although the shell of the nacelle remains.

“Due to the advanced and amphibious nature of the particular location, RWE has spent a while reviewing all potential technical options referring to the elimination, deconstruction or replanting of the affected turbine.”

The components removed from the turbine will be brought to Great Yarmouth port for recycling.
