“I think they’re very timely, given what’s going on in the U.S. right now,” mentioned attendee Molly De Marco. “A lot of division. You can see there’s oppression and poverty being illustrated, and the church used for a variety of reasons and a variety of messages.”

Watson mentioned he leaves folks to kind their very own ideas on the pictures, bringing their consideration to issues they could have in any other case missed.

“The thing is, I didn’t find God in the photos,” photographer and attendee Donn Young mentioned. “I find the illusion of God, the symbol of God. When I think of God, I think of faith, and I think of a real fondness for kindness. That is missing when you see just the scene and some words.”

A photograph of “God In Christ Jesus For Sale” from Cornell Watson’s exhibition “God’s Country,” was displayed on the Peel Gallery + Photo Lab from Sept. 10 to Oct. 5. Photo courtesy of Morgan Perry.

Attendee and UNC graduate pupil Briana Edwards mentioned she discovered the images very palpable.

“I really prefer art that captures moments in time versus designing a set or creating an environment, just capturing America for what it is right now,” Edwards mentioned.

One piece that stood out, titled“MAGA Prayer,” featured two Trump supporters at a “Save America” rally in Wilmington, N.C., the place Trump was campaigning for Republican candidates previous to the 2022 midterm elections. In the picture, a girl holds her arms out in prayer, sporting a shirt of Trump’s face subsequent to a person holding a “Make America Great Again” hat to his chest, giving Watson what he known as “the death stare” by the digital camera lens.

Another standout was the piece “Righteous Rage,” a staged picture of a Black lady holding a molotov cocktail alongside the American flag and an aged Black lady clutching a Bible.

The turnout on the opening ceremony of “God’s Country” demonstrated that there isn’t a restrict to who artwork can attain. Watson mentioned he looks like this exhibit helps folks to cease for a second and see the issues that they could have missed — or didn’t see in any respect.

“I can’t really force people to think the same way that I think, but I think having people see some of these things, it is healthy to be able to see what you haven’t seen,” Watson mentioned.
