Saved by the Beep: Test Your Smoke Alarm Day September 28

Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services is becoming a member of fireplace departments throughout Ontario in selling Test Your Smoke Alarm Day on Saturday, September 28, 2025.  

On September 28, residents are inspired to push the button on their smoke alarms—in case you hear the beep, you already know your alarm is working. Put a reminder in your calendar for a month-to-month examine, this small effort could make an enormous distinction.   

“Working smoke alarms save lives,” stated Fire Prevention Officer Matt Given. “Just a few seconds can make the difference between safely escaping a fire and tragedy. Testing your alarm is quick, simple, and could save your family’s life.”

• Most deadly fires happen in houses that don’t have working smoke alarms. 

• Smoke alarms needs to be examined each month and batteries needs to be modified a minimum of yearly. Smoke alarms needs to be changed after 10 years of use. 

• By legislation, a working smoke alarm should be put in on each storey and out of doors all sleeping areas in each residence in Ontario.
