South African wildlife photographer Wim van den Heever has been named the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025 for his highly effective picture, Ghost Town Visitor.
The picture exhibits a brown hyena among the many stays of a long-abandoned diamond mining city in Kolmanskop, Namibia.
Brown hyenas are nocturnal, largely solitary and fairly uncommon, making capturing them on movie fairly difficult.
“Testament to the photographer’s determination and patience, using camera trap technology, it took Wim a decade to get this single shot of a brown hyena after first noticing their tracks at the site,” competitors organisers mentioned in a press launch.
The snap was chosen from greater than 60,000 entries within the world competitors which, now in its 61st 12 months, is touted to be the most important nature pictures competitors on this planet.
The contest, developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London, units out to exhibit the world’s greatest nature pictures and wildlife photojournalism from photographers of all ages, nationalities and expertise ranges.
