Women’s Tennis Heads To Champaign For ITA Midwest Regionals

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University ladies’s tennis group competes within the 2025 ITA Midwest Regional Championship this weekend, hosted by University of Illinois. The five-day occasion from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Monday, Oct. 20 brings in high applications from the area, all hoping to lock of their NCAA Division I Singles and Doubles Championship bids. 

The Huskies started with six gamers competing within the singles qualifying spherical of 64, trying to be a part of teammate Irmak Budak in the primary draw. Theodora Kousiou, Nataly Ninova and Sophia Shlyakhta every opened the primary qualifying spherical with a win, advancing to the spherical of 32.

Ninova dropped the primary set to Western Michigan’s Marielou Baudouin, however bounced again to safe her spot in the primary draw, successful 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Shlyakhta, who entered the qualifying draw as an alternate, downed Illinois’ Rose Seccia 6-4, 6-3 to lock in her spot. Kousiou fell quick to Elena Palioura of Southern Illinois, 6-2, 6-2. 

With Budak, Ninova and Shlyakhta all making the minimize, it is the primary time since at the least 2009 NIU has had three gamers in the primary draw of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
