LONG BEACH, Calif. — BYU swim made its debut at the third annual MPSF Open Water Championships Saturday.

The competition was held at Marine Stadium, a saltwater inlet off the coast of California.

Saturday’s championship began with the men’s 5K, where Darwin Anderson, Tanner Nelson, Easton Mousser and Dane Weber represented the Cougars. Anderson led BYU with a ninth-place finish at 1:02:15.80. Weber finished shortly after at 1:04:51.39, putting him in 16th.

Mousser completed the 5K event in 20th at 1:06:59.19, with Nelson crossing the line at 1:14:18.78, placing him in 30th.

The women’s 5K kicked off at 11:30 a.m. MDT with freshmen Melissa Turlea and Cher Patrick competing for the Cougars. Patrick finished in 15th with a time of 1:04:56.00, with Turlea following in 32nd at 1:07:14.00.

Following the 5K events, the men’s 2000 relay team, composed of Anderson, Nelson, Mousser and Weber, competed, taking second after a neck-and-neck battle on the final leg of the race.

The Cougars finished with a time of 24:35.03, averaging a pace of 1:14 per 100 meters.

The women’s 2000 relay team finished in third, with a time of 26:13.16. Haylee Tiffany and Kara Martinson joined the relay team alongside Turlea and Patrick.

A total score of 94 put the BYU men’s team in fourth place, with the women’s team finishing in fifth with a score of 65.
