Lawyer says FBI focused Michigan males over gun exercise, on-line chats

“He says they got it all wrong. … There’s no plan. There was no plot, and there was no imminent threat of a terrorism event in the state of Michigan at all. And I believe him.”

Makled maintains that the case is about protected free speech — associates speaking powerful on the web — and that there was no plan to hurt anybody.

Makled stated his consumer is in good spirits, however involved.

“He’s certainly scared,” Makled stated. “He’s certainly concerned about the political pressure from Washington. He’s worried about his family and what could potentially happen.

“They’re praying and hoping that nothing comes out of this. They do not imagine their son was radicalized or had any a part of a terrorist plot.”

The family also is hoping the U.S. Attorney’s Office sees things the same way and “acknowledge that there is nothing there,” Makled said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined comment Nov. 1, as did Jordan Hall, spokesperson for the Detroit FBI office.

When asked whether the FBI used undercover agents in this investigation, Makled said: “I don’t know, as a result of there’s no plot to uncover.”

Makled said this case reminds him of the failed 2012 Hutaree terrorism trial, which involved a group of heavily armed militia members upset with the government, and talking about committing all sorts of violence while “enjoying military” in the woods.

The defense in that case argued that it was all just talk. The judge eventually agreed and acquitted seven of the Hutaree defendants, just as the jury was about to go into deliberations. The defendants were free to go and the jury was sent home.

“This is like Hutaree 101,” Makled said of the current case, adding: “I do not know what the federal government has but … however it’s giving me these Hutaree vibes.”
