The telescopic view of a cosmic cloud in opposition to a darkish starry sky, with some areas partially blocked by darkish mud clumps, was captured by the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Paranal website in Chile on 31 October.
“Located about 10,000 light years away, this ‘cosmic bat’ is flying between the southern constellations of Circinus and Norma. Spanning an area of the sky equivalent to four full moons, it looks as if it’s trying to hunt the glowing spot above it for food,” based on an announcement from ESO.
“This nebula is a stellar nursery, an enormous cloud of fuel and dirt from which stars are born. The toddler stars inside it launch sufficient power to excite hydrogen atoms round them, making them glow with the extreme shade of pink seen on this eye-catching picture.
“The darkish filaments within the nebula appear to be the skeleton of our house bat. These constructions are colder and denser accumulations of fuel than their environment, with mud grains that block the seen gentle from stars behind.
“Named after a large catalogue of bright star-forming regions in the southern sky, the most prominent clouds here are RCW 94, which represents the right wing of the bat, and RCW 95, which forms the body, while the other parts of the bat have no official designation.”
The depiction was captured with VST, a telescope owned and operated by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics and hosted on the ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
Onboard VST is the OmegaCAM, a state-of-the-art 268-megapixel digital camera, which permits the VST to picture huge areas of the sky.
This picture was pieced collectively by combining observations via completely different filters, clear to completely different colors or wavelengths of sunshine.
