‘Huge shock’ as Sherborne almshouse paintings valued at £3.5m

A triptych portray that was stored in an almshouse chapel has been valued at as much as £3.5m by auctioneers.

St Johns’ Almshouse, in Sherborne, Dorset, mentioned it acquired the shock information after giving the altarpiece to Sotheby’s public sale home for safekeeping throughout renovation work.

Experts recognized it as the one surviving work of an unknown painter who was lively in Brussels within the late fifteenth Century.

The triptych shall be auctioned on 3 December to boost cash for brand new lodging for Sherborne folks.

The portray, depicting 5 miracles of Christ, reportedly survived spiritual purges by being hidden on the almshouse for lots of of years, Sotheby’s mentioned.

It was rediscovered within the early nineteenth Century and placed on show.

In 2023, it closed its 19 accommodation units, after a financial review found they were unsustainable.

Since then, only one unit has been available to rent, along with an adjacent cottage.

Chairman Richard Hunt said: “For practically 600 years, our mission has been to supply lodging for native folks in want.

“Now, with the sale of this artwork, we have an important opportunity to protect the work that the charity can do for generations to come.”
