We are delighted to welcome Senegalese visible artist, curator and unbiased scholar Djibril Dramé for a brief experimental movie screening and dialogue. The occasion will discover narratives throughout images and movie, uncovering intersections of reminiscence, identification, and creativity in modern Senegalese artwork. The dialogue shall be chaired by Dr Estrella Sendra.

About the movie

Gardienne challenges conventional narrative buildings by intertwining the tales of Muluken and Lukas, a sister and brother, with that of Israel Dejene, founding father of Megabi Skate. Together, these narratives kind a poetic and delicate portrait of life in Entoto, on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.

Muluken, the elder sister, teaches her brother Lukas methods to skateboard, providing him a means out of a cycle of poverty and decline. In parallel, Israel Dejene’s journey reveals how his ardour for skateboarding turned a path to group engagement, schooling, and empowerment for native youth.

In this movie, the guardian is Muluken, Lukas’s elder sister, a younger boy from Shromeda, a neighbourhood in Addis Ababa’s suburbs. Often left to his personal units, Lukas often discovered himself in hassle. His sister, stuffed with tenderness and artistic instinct, determined someday to purchase him a skateboard. This easy gesture introduced new hope into his life.

About Djibril Drame

Djibril Dramé is a Senegalese-born visible artist and unbiased scholar whose work illuminates socially related and sometimes controversial points. His artwork displays Africa’s multifaceted historical past and numerous cultures, proposing different narratives of the continent.

In latest years, Djibril has engaged deeply with cinema. His work has featured at worldwide artwork festivals corresponding to Art X Lagos and 1-54 African Art Fair Paris.
