AGO Photography Department Celebrates 25 Years with a Daring Exhibition

To mark its twenty fifth anniversary, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) Photography Department is marking the milestone with a particular exhibition that includes 94 works, thoughtfully chosen by a spread of main voices in Toronto’s images neighborhood. The exhibition, led by AGO Curator of Photography Sophie Hackett and titled Collective Visions: Celebrating 25 Years of Photography, options works spanning from the 1840s to the current day and highlights artists from each Toronto and all over the world.

The AGO Photography Department options over 70,000 objects, together with quite a few notable collections from all over the world, in addition to an ever-growing assortment of works by native Toronto artists, each previous and current, that seize the dynamic metropolis in their very own distinctive approach. Taking a novel strategy in curation, from October 1st to November fifth, the general public was invited to vote for the ultimate piece included within the exhibition. The selections have been between Kelani Abass, Scrap of Evidence, Ayajo, 2021; Jaromir Funke, Abstraction, 1925-1930; and the third alternative that in the end received and is now on show, Elaine Ling, Baobab #5, Mali, 2015. In addition to Elaine Ling, work by artists corresponding to Wolfgang Tillmans, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, and Barbara Astman can be seen, to call just a few. With every art work proven being chosen by completely different artists, curators, collectors, and students in the neighborhood, every bit is accompanied by a written part carried out by the selector explaining the work they selected and why.

Launching this month to coincide with the exhibition is Collective States: Worlds of Photography at the AGO, a 224-page e-book printed by AGO and Goose Lane Editions that dives deep into the AGO’s images assortment and celebrates its twenty fifth anniversary. The exhibit is now open on the AGO, situated at 317 Dundas Street West in Toronto.
