‘Surfing Santas’ hit the seashore in vacation custom

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The annual Surfing Santas tradition returned to Cocoa Beach Wednesday morning.

Around 500 surfers dressed up as Santa Claus hit the seashore and waves for Christmas Eve. This distinctive custom all began out as a enjoyable household outing in 2009. 

Founder George Trosset stated he and his son determined to go online collectively as they’d usually do on Christmas Eve 16 years in the past.

But the one distinction that day was that he was dressed up as Santa and his son as an elf.

A neighborhood reporter snapped an image of the browsing duo which ended up making it on the Florida Today newspaper’s entrance cowl. Each yr after that, Trosset stated extra folks began exhibiting up.

 “In 2010, we had 19 people show up,” Trosset stated. “Personal friends, people I’ve known forever, had their phone numbers. It was a fun little party at the beach, then the following year we had 84 people show up. I knew about a third of them, nowadays we have 3, 4, 500 surfers in the water.”

This yr, Surfing Santas is partnering up with the nonprofit group, Who We Play For, to lift consciousness on sudden cardiac loss of life in teenagers and younger adults.

For the event, they are going to be providing free coronary heart screenings for college students between the ages of 10 and 22 and free CPR coaching as effectively. 

Trosset stated the purpose is to coach a minimum of 600 folks in CPR.
