How may the structure of public artwork galleries replicate and reply to the politics of our time?  Les Fonds Regional d’Art Contemporain (or FRACs) are French public establishments created in 1982 with bold twin intent—democratizing entry to modern artwork and decentralizing state energy. Now, six new FRAC galleries, having opened their doorways between 2012 and 2019, supply the circumstances of an architectural and sociopolitical experiment: a finite set of buildings, all constructed in the identical time frame, all engendered with associated ideological missions, however realized by radically completely different architectural visions. Two tasks specifically—Lacaton & Vassal’s FRAC Grand Large and BIG’s FRAC MÉCA—exemplify ends of a spectrum, from structure as an expression of the state as public to structure as an expression of the state as state, respectively. Having but been theorized completely by state-funded actors, in seeing and being seen, these tasks are recontextualized within the phrases of their time—notably the maturation of worldwide, neoliberal, financialized, surveillance-based capitalism—and evaluated on the idea of their sharply juxtaposed formal and materials responses.

Nix Travel Fellow Riley Haakon (MArch ’26) acquired Bachelor’s levels in Economics and Mandarin Chinese from the University of Virginia. He spent the primary decade of his profession in model id and communications technique, earlier than coming to structure by the use of novice craft. His method to design seeks a sensitivity towards tectonic element and the cultures it might carry, and his self-constructed work has been featured in Dwell magazine.

The Art of Great Public Spaces

Fleiss Travel Scholar Exhibition

This exhibition presents a set of hand-drawn and written musings on the character of public area and European attitudes in the direction of the constructed surroundings, with case research drawn throughout Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Copenhagen. Fleiss Travel Scholar Cole Rozwadowski (BS Arch ’26) and Jack Allison (BS Arch ’26) search to grasp how tasks throughout these cities negotiate complicated histories whereas serving as speculative fashions for brand spanking new social interactions, sustainable progress, and formal experimentation. Through observational sketching, on-site images, and reflective writing, they contemplate how differing attitudes on preservation, program, and reuse form attitudes towards public areas and their function in selling democratic and inclusive societies. 

Cole Rozwadowski is a fourth-year undergraduate structure scholar from Culpeper, VA. The son of graphic designers, he has been drawing and making for so long as he can keep in mind. He is within the intersections of the constructed surroundings, group engagement, and public service.

Jack Allison is a fourth-year undergraduate structure scholar from Park City, Utah. He is drawn to outdated buildings, artifacts, and landscapes that really feel “lived in.” His drawing background comes from his time within the Vicenza Program, the place he studied the tranquility and mayhem present in established and rising public areas.

Howland Fellowship Exhibition

This venture investigates how architect Carlo Scarpa choreographs customer motion by layered contrasts – thresholds the place materials, gentle, sound, and texture form expertise and selection. Through maps, drawings, and diagrams of Querini Stampalia Foundation, Castelvecchio, and the Brion Cemetery, Cate paperwork how shifting circumstances and planted kinds information circulation and heighten consciousness. Howland Travel Fellow Cate Southwell (MLA ’26) is a Master of Landscape Architecture candidate with a Bachelor’s in Architecture from UVA. Growing up amongst North Carolina’s pine forests formed her fascination with gentle, texture, and environment. Her work explores how intangible processes reminiscent of sensory expertise and reminiscence inform areas that foster reflection, consciousness, and discovery throughout scales of panorama and structure.

Nis’to is a Dakotah phrase which means “concern for others outside ourselves.” Our design philosophy is deeply rooted on this ethos. Under the supervision of Pheobe Crisman and in shut collaboration with Dustina Gill, an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, we’ve got designed an open-air pavilion that helps group occasions and Indigenous youth camps in Sisseton, South Dakota. The design attracts inspiration from Dakotah vernacular kinds, sustainable supplies, and indigenous constructing practices. Traveling to Sisseton concerned learning regional supplies, partaking in considerate dialogue with tribal members and taking part straight within the development of the pavilion.

Marisa Yamamoto (BS Arch ’26) is an structure undergraduate obsessed with sustainable design grounded in materials innovation, cultural context, and place; aspiring to create areas that intertwine environmental accountability with human expertise.
