Long-time Burlington photographer Didier Delmas died Dec. 22 in Cadours, France, from problems of von Hippel Lindau Syndrome. He was 71.

Born in Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Didier briefly studied structure in Toulouse earlier than leaving college to pursue his desires in images. Self-trained, he first labored as an archeological photographer for Toulouse’s Musée Saint-Raymond earlier than opening his first studio, specializing in hard-to-photograph metallic and glass. His early superb arts images are within the everlasting collections on the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and the Galerie Le Château d’Eau, Toulouse.

During summer time visits to the U.S., Didier photographed campus life for Middlebury’s French School. When in 1983 he was awarded a images contract for the “Joy of Gardening” cookbook, he settled first at Shelburne Farms after which in Burlington. For almost 20 years he excelled in promoting and catalog images. His superb arts giclée prints have been offered via Frog Hollow and elsewhere.

Retiring from images in 2001, Didier pursued a second dream of finding out philosophy. After finishing a bachelor’s in Cinema Studies at Burlington College, he went on to earn a grasp’s and a doctorate at McGill University, specializing in Seventeenth-century visible tradition.

Didier is survived by his father, Bernard Delmas, his sisters Marilyne (Roger) Nègro and Christine Delmas and their kids, all of southwest France, in addition to by his ex-wives, Gretchen Amussen of Paris and Nancy Welch of Hanover, New Hampshire. His loss of life can also be mourned by the numerous Vermont mates who affectionately referred to as him “Chef Didier” and bear in mind him as a gifted chef and beneficiant host.
