Writer, traveler and movie critic Vladimir Jean-Gilles shares 5 solo journey tricks to maximize  your private progress in 2026.

Travel log: Istanbul, Türkiye. November 12, 2024

“It’s now 7 a.m. in Istanbul. After having breakfast and having fun with my morning tea, I picked up an area newspaper from the lodge foyer. By the time I made it again to my room, I used to be already misplaced, questioning in deep thought… as I typically do…

Looking out my window, I’m now the witness of 20-some million lives in a spot stuffed with strangers with considerably acquainted faces.

The just one I don’t acknowledge is me….

And but, I don’t really feel misplaced. If something, I really feel extra myself than I’ve ever been. But on the similar time… I’m not. Suddenly, I’m going through a reality I’ve stored hidden from myself for some time. I wasn’t certain if I’d be robust sufficient to confess it, not to mention reveal it.

They say that to be able to develop into a brand new model of your self, the outdated model should die. That at all times sounded a bit dramatic to me. But isn’t that what change is? I don’t know. Really. I’m conscious of my progress. I study as I’m going, and I’ve come to see that as considered one of my most stunning qualities.

But change… change is the aim of progress. I perceive that now greater than ever.

But had I identified that earlier than… perhaps I might’ve slowed down a bit.

Something to consider.”

In quick, I used to be rising—mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Those classes didn’t come from guidebooks or itineraries. They got here from the act of touring alone, from permitting myself to be each misplaced and located in unfamiliar locations. That’s what solo journey must be all about.
