Early in my images journey, I discovered a lesson that continues to form how I method each my inventive work and my skilled life.

One summer time afternoon in Sugar Hill, Harlem, I used to be strolling with my Nikon, documenting the neighborhood I like. At the time, I had a couple of 12 months of expertise behind the lens. I used to be comfy capturing magnificence from a distance — observing, composing, and shifting on.

But that day, I noticed a pair sitting carefully collectively on a bench surrounded by empty house. I felt compelled to {photograph} them.

Up till then, my method had been simple and transactional:
“Hi, I’m Lamar, I’m a photographer — may I take your picture?”

Sometimes it labored. Often, it didn’t.

This time, I attempted one thing completely different.

I requested, “Can I ask why you’re sitting so close together when you have all this space?”

That query modified all the things.

It shifted the interplay from a request to a dialog. It created connection as a substitute of distance. What adopted was not only a {photograph}, however a narrative — about how they met, what sustained their relationship, and classes on dedication that I nonetheless carry with me at this time.

That second reshaped how I work.

I noticed I couldn’t proceed documenting Harlem — or something — from a distance. Real influence requires presence. It requires curiosity. It requires listening.

Years later, I submitted that {photograph} to a Harlem exhibition honoring Harriet Tubman. It was chosen. What started as a easy dialog turned a chunk of labor that related love, legacy, and neighborhood.

The lesson extends far past images.

No matter your career, you’ll encounter moments that require stepping outdoors your consolation zone. You can function at a distance — or you’ll be able to lean in, ask higher questions, and construct significant relationships.

The distinction between transactional and transformational usually comes down to at least one factor:

Connection.

Don’t keep at a distance. Get curious. Get current. Build relationships.

That’s the place progress occurs.
