Art collectors Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys quietly bought a whole exhibition of native images at Por Vida espresso store and gallery in Barrio Logan.

The Dean Collection, the non-public, world-class assortment of Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys, is dedicated to that includes up to date artists and artists of coloration. The couple has a house in San Diego, the place they’re elevating their youngsters.

Just days earlier than the announcement that their main exhibit, “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys,” would open at MCASD this spring, Swizz Beatz visited Por Vida.

He was so impressed by the present that he acquired every piece.

While superstar consideration may appear serendipitous, areas like Por Vida and the Barrio Logan inventive group have been working for years — many years — to raise up artwork and assist dwelling artists.

Transforming a restaurant right into a gallery

Last fall, married couple Carolina Santana and Milo Lorenzana, made a daring choice.

Their cafe, Por Vida had thrived for a decade: vibrant partitions full of artwork, beans roasted in-house and sourced from farmers they know and a menu brimming with inventive, Mexican-inspired drinks. It had lengthy been a group gathering spot.

But one thing was lacking, and so they have been prepared for a change.

“Caro was just like, ‘What if we take it back to the roots of how we got started?”

Lorenzana had run a number of influential Barrio Logan artwork areas over the previous 15 years — together with The Spot and La Bodega Gallery — and helped launch Voz Alta, a gallery based by the Taco Shop Poets collective in 2022 to create house for border Latinx/Chicanx creatives.

When they opened Por Vida, espresso could be central, however artwork on the partitions was at all times a part of the imaginative and prescient.

This 12 months, they unveiled a renovated inside: fewer tables, minimalist white partitions for curated reveals and loads of house for guests to browse.

While the transition is a threat, Santana and Lorenzana are inclined to comply with their instincts whether or not it’s unveiling a brand new drink, slicing a menu merchandise or an even bigger leap like this.

“It’s all intuitive, to be honest,” Santana mentioned. “It truly is an intuitive approach that we’ve run with operating Por Vida. Even timing-wise, if it felt right, we ran with it. And even no matter how good the idea, if it felt like the timing was off, we just put it on hold.”

They stay optimistic, and grateful for the group. At first, they deliberate to strive the gallery format for a 12 months. But reveals are already booked nicely into 2027, that includes native artists and world-class visiting expertise.

We’re excited to see what’s subsequent for us, and who comes via the door subsequent. We received Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys already on month two.

“We’re excited to see what’s next for us, and who comes through the door next. We got Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys already on month two,” Lorenzana mentioned, laughing.

A neighborhood lens

Por Vida’s first exhibit, “La tierra me está llamando,” by Tekpatl Patricia Cruz, featured magical realism-infused work and portraits exploring household roots — some painted immediately on strips of bark.

“She is a local artist from Barrio Logan, a muralist, she’s a wife, a mother, community activist, business owner — all those beautiful things,” Lorenzana said. “She hit the ground running for us.”

The present exhibition, “Neighborhood Visualz,” presents 46 movie images by Oscar Cruz and MJ Pimentel (@sd_sharpshooter and @whoshotya_35mm).

The Dean Collection bought the whole present after Swizz Beatz and his daughter visited final week.

“I think about 95 or so percent of the photos were taken in Barrio Logan, of the community, of the people that are there, the actual grandmas, the grandpas, the kids, the park — just highlighting the things that create the fabric of Barrio Logan,” Lorenzana mentioned.

This is traditionally only a very beautiful, very sturdy neighborhood, a neighborhood that takes care of its personal.

Pimentel and Cruz shoot and develop 35mm movie, embracing the sluggish and aware course of and capturing the world as they see it.

“This neighborhood means everything to me. I’m born and raised here. All my friends are here. My family lived here. It’s everything that I know,” Cruz mentioned. “I want the world to see its beauty. This is historically just a very gorgeous, very strong neighborhood, a neighborhood that takes care of its own.”

Pimentel describes Barrio Logan as a “heartbeat,” the place on a regular basis interactions are the moments she tries to protect.

“I love taking photos everywhere I go, but there’s something about just a special, raw moment, whether it’s like an embrace or someone who I see all the time and you catch their warm smile — little moments that you can’t get back. You can’t go back and redo,” Pimentel mentioned.

Pimental and Cruz started working collectively at first of COVID when she overheard him speaking about movie images via her open window. She realized she was already a fan of his work, however was fascinated to be taught he developed his personal images — and wished to strive too.

They linked with Lorenzana and Santana, who offered artist studio house in Por Vida’s basement. There, they arrange a darkroom the place each photograph within the exhibition was developed.

Barrio Logan’s inventive vibrancy did not simply give Pimental and Cruz a spot to create and grasp their work, it gave them permission.

“This community is what even got me to start saying ‘I’m an artist,’ or to believe that my photographs are art,” Pimental mentioned.

Neighborhood Visualz meets The Dean Collection

For Por Vida, the Dean Collection buy is proof of idea.

“I don’t want to say ‘in so soon in our gallery career,’ because I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Lorenzana mentioned. “We’ve been around it for a long time, but a moment like this in 15, 20 years can still humble you, you know? Man, anything can happen.”

While entire-show acquisitions are uncommon, the influence goes past the monetary.

A second like this in 15, 20 years can nonetheless humble you, you already know? Man, something can occur.

“The visibility and representation that is so important,” Pimentel said. “I feel like a lot of these people in these photos, they’re my friends, they’re my neighbors, they’re people who are special to me. So I feel honored to be able to bring them to a platform like The Dean Collection and have it on a scale of that size — and kind of highlight them for other people to see the beauty in these moments that might have gone unseen had we not been walking around the neighborhood that day.”

“It definitely was very unexpected,” she added.

“These ones right here were from the BLM protests, and this was actually on the Coronado Bridge. I was on the opposite side. I was the first one up on this side, and they were all on the other side of the bridge. These are pretty epic moments to document because it’s like power to the people in a moment like that. If you weren’t there, you didn’t get to see this. This is exactly like the type of community that we live in — everyone takes care of each other. On a world scale, we need to embrace that type of community heartbeat that we feel here in Logan.” — MJ Pimentel.

She identified what many grassroots arts leaders have lengthy understood: “It really starts in your own backyard — those bigger museums or bigger platforms, they look to places like this for inspiration.”

How to doc a neighborhood

“I just happened to be walking to the taco shop, going to get some food with my girlfriend, and we see this guy on his bike. I was like, ‘Look, this is just like straight beauty, right? A strong individual on a really dope bike like this.’ I told him, ‘Dude, you look like you command a lot of respect, like you’re comfortable with where you’re at. Can I take your photo?’” — Oscar Cruz.

Cruz gives recommendation for photographers, newbie or seasoned, documenting communities: “Make sure anyone that you actually encounter on the street, try and actually have respect and maybe build a relationship with the people in those neighborhoods. Always move with respect.”

Don’t be afraid to point out your work to the world.

Oscar Cruz, artist

He encourages photographers to be intentional about their work. “Just be authentic. Have love for it.”

And, he added, do not forget to get the artwork on the market.

“If you’re currently stuck in a slump and you have all this work that you’re sitting on, don’t be afraid to start trying to put it out. Don’t be afraid to show your work to the world,” Cruz mentioned.
