Exhibit on the Getty focuses on Black tradition and activism

LOS ANGELES — Jeffrey Henson Scales was barely a teen when his journey into pictures started. His father gave him 30 years value of Life and Look magazines and a Leica Camera. He poured over the problems, noting what was pictured and what wasn’t.

“Representation for people of color was sketchy at the time,” he recalled. “But the beautiful display of photographs and the big picture stories…I was getting an education in the history of photography by just going through these magazines over and over again.”

At 13, he traveled by way of Illinois along with his grandmother, capturing the summer season of ‘67 with an Instamatic digital camera.

“It was called the ‘Long Hot Summer’ because uprisings happened in all these Black communities across the Midwest and East,” Scales defined. “And Chicago was very tense.”

“This includes 4 million photographs taken by photographers for Ebony and Jet and their other smaller magazines as well,” she mentioned. “Another archive is that of the architect Paul R. Williams, who was here based in Los Angeles and has developed the urban landscape shaped by his unique perspective as a Black Angeleno.”
