Photographer works with terminally in poor health pets to assist them ‘dwell on previous life’

In a park in Menomonee Falls, Erika Mork and her father Stephen are being guided down a snowy hill in late January with Erika’s 12-year-old canine, Cinnamon. Erika calls her Cinna. They’ve been collectively since Cinnamon was 4 months outdated. Cinnamon is a mixed-breed canine with largely black and brown fur, and white markings round her eyes and mouth. 

Erika and Stephen had Cinnamon’s DNA examined. Stephen stated she’s largely basset hound and beagle.

“You have the silliest little underbite and big floppy ears and big bushy eyebrows. Just the sweetest old lady,” Erika tells Cinna.

The pair shuffled with Cinnamon onto a frozen stretch of the Menomonee River in single-degree climate for a photograph shoot. This park was the place Erika would stroll Cinnamon when she was extra cellular. 

“We haven’t done it in a while,” Erika stated.

“Yeah, because of her … ,” Stephen stated as they each paused.

“Tumor,” Erika added.

“Yeah,” Stephen stated. “The tumor has really put the kibosh on a lot of those longer walks.”

Cinna’s house owners reached out to Sussex-based photographer Heide Hongsermeier for this photograph session. Hongsermeier is the proprietor and operator of Wild Iris Photography and an affiliate with The Tilly Project, a world listing for pet house owners to attach with end-of-life pet photographers. 

According to The Tilly Project, Hongsermeier is one in all about 40 photographers providing free or reduced-cost photograph periods in Wisconsin. Hongsermeier stated she images as much as six end-of-life pet pictures periods per thirty days. She turned an affiliate photographer with The Tilly Project in 2021.

Hongsermeier instructed WPR’s “Wisconsin Today” she wished to offer end-of-life pet pictures after her canine Marty was recognized with hemangiosarcoma — an aggressive blood most cancers — in 2015.

“I struggled finding a photographer that would take us and my dog and my young child as photography clients with a reasonable price,” Hongsermeier stated. “I found that that was very much: if I have photos with him, I’ve honored him in some way. It was important for me to honor him prior to his death.”

In Menomonee Falls, Erika and Stephen deliver Cinnamon via the park, stopping a number of occasions to put down a blanket and pose for pictures. Hongsermeier directs Erika and Stephen and makes whining noises to get Cinna’s consideration. Erika and Stephen chortle.

“End-of-life pet costs can be a lot,” Hongsermeier stated. “I still do other things so that I can afford to offer these for free.”
