Sperm Whales Caught on Digital camera Headbutting Every Different for the First Time

In 1820, The Essex, a whaling ship, was attacked and sunk by two head-on strikes from a sperm whale close to the Galapagos Islands within the Pacific Ocean. “It appeared with tenfold fury and vengeance in his aspect,” the primary mate Owen Chase later wrote. “The surf flew in all directions about him with the continual violent thrashing of his tail. His head about half out of the water, and in that way he came upon us, and again struck the ship.” 

The demise of The Essex and the ordeal suffered by its stranded crew would later encourage Herman Melville to write down Moby Dick. But are sperm whales actually susceptible to headbutting? They are, in line with analysis published as we speak in Marine Mammal Science.

Using three drones, researchers from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland monitoring sperm whales across the Azores and Balearic islands serendipitously captured younger males on digital camera ramming one another with their heads for the primary time.  

“It was really exciting to observe this behavior, which we knew had been hypothesized for such a long time, but not yet documented and described systematically,” research writer Alec Burlem, now on the University of Hawaii, stated in a statement. 

Marine biologists beforehand speculated that this type of headbutting might be a key a part of competitors between sexually mature males, seldom seen as a result of it occurred beneath the floor. Others have been skeptical, nonetheless. A sperm whale’s huge noggin accommodates organs very important for producing the sounds utilized in echolocation and communication, and wielding it as a weapon might not have been the perfect technique, they theorized.

While this dramatic video footage appears to settle the controversy, the researchers say extra research is required to put this conduct in its correct context and decide its results on group cohesion and social dynamics.

In the meantime, Burlem is crediting the usage of unmanned drones with the unintended discovery and calling on different drone pilots to submit their whale footage for examination.  

“It’s exciting to think about what as-yet unseen behaviors we may soon uncover, as well as how more headbutting observations may help us to shed light on the functions the behavior may serve,” he stated. “If there are people out there with similar footage, we would be very keen to hear from them.”
