Inventive Swimming: Team USA’s Anita Alvarez on the actual perks of management

Assuming the mantle of management forward of a house Olympics

Filled with data gained throughout greater than 12 seasons as a part of the nationwide staff, Alvarez hopes to fill a casual management function as essentially the most senior energetic athlete on Team USA.

“I hope to bring that experience and help my teammates in ways that maybe I wasn’t being helped when I was their age,” she defined. “Because there wasn’t that person who had gone through these things before.”

While the USA have but to pick a staff captain for the continuing competitors cycle, the four-time World Aquatics Championships medallist goals to empower youthful members of the nationwide staff via mentorship and shared expertise.

“There’s a part of me that wants to lean into the type of leader that pulls other leaders in, finds everyone’s strength and allows everyone to feel like they have a voice, and [that] they have a special role in the team,” she asserted. 

“Just because I have the years and the experience, I don’t want it to feel like I know everything and I’m going to lead everything,” Alvarez added. “I think it’s a very collaborative role within the team.”

She additionally hopes to foster the identical mentorship qualities in rising nationwide staff members.

“I would hope that other people feel that they have that confidence to then become the next leader of the team, so that there’s no big dips when people retire or anything.” 

Still, she has relished the prospect to tackle a casual management function throughout the staff, particularly as they bear a fancy transitional section forward of LA28.    

“I am focusing on myself as a leader for this team, but also for my life post-sport,” she stated. “I’m motivated to get up and go to the pool every single day as a result of I do know I’m rising as a human, not simply as an inventive swimmer.

“I’m becoming the best version of myself every day through the challenges, through the adversity, through the hard training [and] everything that goes on.”
