The British-Nigerian photographer Christianah Ebenezer has had her work featured in Grazia and Vanity Fair magazines, and her pictures of the actresses Michaela Cole and Letitia Wright have been exhibited at London’s National Portrait Gallery. But earlier this month, the 34-year-old discovered herself at Windsor Castle, the place she was invited to {photograph} the Prince and Princess of Wales, forward of the state banquet for the Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was on an official go to to the UK.

It was the first time I’d been to Windsor, regardless of residing in London just about all my life. But the citadel was an expertise, and simply actually lovely to see.

‘I worked with the Duchess of Edinburgh last year and we shot her 60th birthday portraits, which was really amazing. I was contacted earlier this year about this opportunity. So yeah, that’s pretty much how it came about.’

Christianah and her group did a location recce of Windsor Castle forward of the day, to see ‘what would look cool, visually, and where we could create the image. It was a really nice day, and a really great collaborative effort. We had a look through some references the princess had put together – a lot were [of] nature, love, and [the] pre-Raphaelite era. And I just knew the set designers we worked with would bring those elements to life. We thought, how do we bring nature, excitement, and that expression when we’re shooting indoors? It really allowed me to explore those worlds to capture that one moment. I think it was genuinely a really good collaborative effort, and it felt like the two different worlds came together quite well.’

So was Kate, who is understood to like images, eager to be as concerned behind the digital camera as in entrance of it? ‘It felt like, you know when photographers know how [other] photographers work,’ says Christianah. ‘It was a conducive environment, and in terms of lighting as well, you can see where her eye was strong and having that feedback was really helpful. The fact that there was a mood board that she wanted to work off was also helpful, and the green of her dress was very visually pleasing. We were all working towards the same goal, with the same idea of what would make a great image.’

Christianah says that at any time when she’s photographing someone – ‘whatever the event or occasion, it could be an actor or a singer’ – she’s at all times aware of wanting the end result to be one thing they admire and that they ‘look at in ten years’ time and assume, is that this one thing I’ve had enter into as properly?’

There was a playfulness’ to the royal couple, she says. ‘And we saw gentle expressions as well. For me, it was a case of trying to capture those in-between moments.’

Did she really feel any stress on the day? ‘I’m used to this. I’ve photographed fairly a couple of totally different celebrities, individuals in numerous profession paths in addition to these within the artistic and leisure industries. That expertise has ready me properly, and I’ve a group of lighting assistants and set designers, and all of us work so properly in unison. As a photographer, I’m solely pretty much as good as my group. If the lighting and set design look nice, we just like the pose, we have now an concept the place we need to place our topics.
