Photographer Amy Evans combines pictures with textiles

Photographer and former artwork educator Amy Evans leans into an observational consciousness of her setting, capturing the delicate nuances of sunshine to tell her work. 

Originally from New Jersey and now primarily based in South Carolina, Evans has a BFA in Photography from The Cooper Union in New York and an MA in Studio Art/Photography at Kean University in New Jersey. She has exhibited her work in quite a few museums and in gallery exhibits on the East and West Coasts. Her work is additionally included in the company collections of Polaroid, AT&T and BASF.  

Her latest assortment, Layers of Time, explores imagery drawn from Greenville’s historic textile trade. The collection facilities on the space’s iconic textile mills and displays the complete spectrum of mill life — from employee and village communities to the artifacts they left behind.  

Evans’ course of begins with plain-weave cotton, comparable to what was produced in Greenville’s textile mills through the late 1800s and early 1900s. She deconstructs and folds the material earlier than scanning it on a high-resolution flatbed scanner. That scan turns into the background for layered composites of her authentic pictures of the mills and historic pictures of South Carolina mill staff.  

The last work is printed on acid-free archival rag paper. The interaction between the altered floor and the layered imagery creates an ephemeral high quality, revealing not solely what stays bodily current, but additionally what lingers unseen within the viewer’s creativeness.
