AUSTIN, Texas – University of Iowa senior Sal Capaldo leads the men’s decathlon through five events after scoring 4,016 points on the opening day of the Texas Relays.

Capaldo posted two personal records to kick off competition in Texas, setting personal bests in the long jump and shot put. In the long jump, he bettered his previous best by one-tenth of a meter and finished at 7.09 meters. Capaldo followed that performance with another lifetime best in the shot put, recording a throw of 12.37 meters.

Along with the lifetime bests, Capaldo totaled four top-five finishes on the opening day of competition. He placed third in the 100 meters with a time of 10.63. In the high jump, Capaldo cleared 1.99 meters to finish just shy of his personal best. He closed the day with a fourth-place finish of 50.03 in the 400 meters.

“Sal had a great first day at the Texas Relays,” Director of Iowa Track and Field Joey Woody said. “I was very pleased with how he got things started in the 100 meters and he kept things rolling with consistent performances throughout the day. It’s always nice to be over 4,000 points after day one. He is on track and in a great position going into day two.”

Capaldo will return to competition Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters.

Up Next: Iowa continues competition at the Texas Relays and opens at the Bobcat Invitational on Thursday. Action begins at 10 a.m. (CT).
