4. City hosts two free Easter Egg Hunts

Little ones can seize an Easter basket and hop into spring enjoyable as they scoop up 1000’s of colourful eggs, scattered throughout Messer and Myers parks throughout the City of Tallahassee’s annual Easter egg hunt celebrations on Saturday, April 4.

The pleasure begins with the annual Eggs-traordinary Easter Egg Hunt, designed for youngsters with particular wants. The highlight of the day is the Grandmaster Showdown from 1-3:30 p.m., featuring a live match between two internationally recognized grandmasters: GM Julio Becerra and GM Alex Fishbein and grandmaster lectures from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. The festival concludes on April 5, with a Quick Tournament beginning at 10: a.m. and a Blitz Tournament at 3:30 p.m. for registered players. Tournament play is coordinated with the Tallahassee Young Knights Chess Club.

Bonus occasion: Layers: An Exhibition by Leah MacDonald

Venvi Art Gallery, 2901 E. Park Ave., presents “Layers,” an exhibition by artist Leah MacDonald, on view from March 3 through May 17, with a first Friday art reception from 5-8 p.m. April 3.

“Layers” features MacDonald’s encaustic works created on wood panels. Through a process of layering photography, printmaking, and encaustic, these works explore themes of accumulation, memory, and transformation. Each piece evolves through collage and reworking—images are added, obscured, repositioned, and revealed—so that no single layer remains fixed or final.

Using photographs of women, horses, and flowers, MacDonald’s compositions hover between presence and erasure. The encaustic surface simultaneously preserves and conceals, allowing fragments of imagery to emerge while others recede beneath the wax. Her background in photography and mixed media has evolved into a distinctive artistic approach she calls “photogestic.”
