Maximus Williamson Named Co-ACC Swimmer of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its men’s and women’s swimming and diving annual honors on Thursday (April 9).

On the men’s side, Maximus Williamson was named both the Co-ACC Swimmer of the Year and the sole recipient of the ACC Freshman of the Year.

Todd DeSorbo was named the ACC Swimming Coach of the Year on the women’s side.

Williamson won both the 200 Freestyle and the 200 IM last month at the NCAA Championships, becoming the second Cavalier in program history to win two individual titles. He was the first freshman to win the 200 Free since 2016 and clocked the second-fastest time ever for a freshman in the event. He also earned first team All-America honors in the 800 Free Relay and the 400 Medley Relay and second team in the 200 and 400 Free Relays. He took silver in the 200 IM at the ACC Championships and helped the 400 Free Relay take bronze.

Williamson is the 12^th swimmer in program history to be voted the ACC Male Swimmer of the Year and the first since Matt McLean in 2011. He is the ninth to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year and joins Fran Crippen (2003) and Matt McLean (2008) as the only Cavaliers to be the freshman and swimmer of the year in the same season.

Williamson shares the ACC Swimmer of the Year honor with  Yamato Okadome of Cal.

DeSorbo led the Cavaliers to an unprecedented sixth consecutive NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, becoming the first coach to win six straight team titles. The Cavaliers swept all five relay titles at the Championship, setting an NCAA Record in the 400 Free Relay, and won three individual event titles, tallying the highest point total in program history. DeSorbo also led the Cavaliers to their seventh consecutive ACC team title.

It marks the seventh consecutive year DeSorbo has earned the accolade.
