Gov. Spanberger vetoes invoice to legalize ability video games within the Commonwealth

Va. (WSET) — Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger on Friday vetoed laws that might legalize ability gaming within the Commonwealth.

Senate Bill 661 aimed to legalize and regulate the gaming machines which have been thought-about a grey space for years. The invoice would even have imposed a 25 p.c tax, set limits on what number of machines can be allowed in any given enterprise and require gamers to be 21 years or older.

In her veto, Governor Spanberger acknowledged that Senate Bill 661 would “strain an already fragmented system and introduce thousands more machines without a comprehensive regulatory system,” and that the “rapid expansion of gaming in Virginia over the last decade has outpaced the Commonwealth’s ability to provide consistent enforcement, robust public safety oversight, and meaningful assessments of the potential impacts or harms of gaming in all its forms.”

Gov. Spanberger pointed to knowledge collected by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority between 2020 and 2021, when ability video games have been legally working within the Commonwealth. The knowledge illustrated a focus of machines in communities with greater percentages of individuals residing beneath the poverty line, decrease training ranges and better percentages of minorities than Virginia as an entire.

The governor has been constant in her assist for centralized gaming enforcement. She mentioned that shifting ahead, she would proceed to work with the General Assembly to verify any enlargement of authorized gaming in Virginia prioritizes the well-being of all communities.
