5K, Kids’ Fun Run kicks off in Electric City

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Thousands of individuals from everywhere in the nation and the world are gearing up for one of many largest races within the Electric City. Sunday is the Scranton half-marathon, however earlier than the large race, there was a small begin to the weekend occasions on Saturday.

Hundreds of runners pounded the pavement for the Scranton 5K and Kids’ Fun Run Saturday afternoon. It began at Scranton High School and looped by way of the Lackawanna Heritage Trail.

“Scranton is kind of a hilly area, so it can be a little bit challenging that way, but the Scranton running community is really a great community. Everybody supports one another, and seeing the Scranton residents come out and ensure people on is really helpful. It helps us get motivated on those tough miles,” Clarks Summit resident Kimberly Portanova stated.

“The buzz is here, you know, the energy, the smiles are here. It’s great, and I think everybody’s extra happy because they know the weather is cooperating,” Scranton Half Marathon Race Director Matthew Byrne defined.

Runners will hit the street by way of the Electric City beginning at 8:00 a.m. Sunday.
