Roll & Read: Children roll out to Evergy Plaza totally free books and enjoyable

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Topeka Public Schools’ Parents as Teachers invited kiddos and their households to Evergy Plaza Saturday for a day of enjoyable and studying.

Parents as Teachers hosted its Roll & Read occasion, encouraging children to roll out on their bikes, skateboards, and scooters and seize a couple of new books to learn.

All of the books offered had been freed from cost.

Nichole Fairley, TPS Parents as Teachers coordinator, stated that studying to children from a younger age helps them grow to be higher readers as they become older.

“One of the really important parts of Parents as Teachers is we are really encouraging families to be their child’s best and first teacher,” Fairley stated. “We know that one of the ways to do that is through literacy, and we know that literacy leads to things like improved third-grade reading levels, which leads to improved graduation rates.”

Fairley added that it’s vital to begin studying to youngsters early, saying, “We know that the more words they hear, the more words that they learn, the earlier they’re going to read and the better readers they’re going to be.”

Plus, the occasion will get households out of their properties and into the neighborhood for some enjoyable actions.

“When we started Roll and Read, we wanted to have it downtown because we wanted to encourage and engage families in a location that maybe a lot of them haven’t been,” Fairley stated.

“When you have young children, you’re not always out and about, so we’re trying to get them downtown to support Topeka. Evergy Plaza has been a great host to us the last couple of years, and so we really are just encouraging families to get out and to be active,” Fairley continued.

Community companions additionally gathered at Evergy Plaza for the occasion, whereas visitor readers volunteered to learn books to children at stations.
