Free Household Enjoyable: Discover Texas Festivals on the Bullock Museum

AUSTIN, Texas — Looking for a enjoyable (and free!) technique to spend your Sunday? The Bullock Texas State History Museum is opening its doorways for H-E-B Free First Sunday, giving households an opportunity to discover, study, and have fun Texas tradition collectively.

This month’s occasion shines a highlight on a brand-new exhibit, “Texas Festivals: Creating Community Through Celebrations,” which highlights the traditions, tales, and vibrant occasions that carry folks collectively throughout the Lone Star State.

Sierra Waggoner and Trevor Scott welcomed Kristin Johnson and Kathryn Siefker, who shared extra about what visitors can anticipate—together with hands-on enjoyable for all ages.

“So the first Sunday of every month at the Bullock Texas State History Museum is free.

It’s free admission, sponsored by H-E-B, and you can come all day from 10 to 5. From 10 to 2, we always have special activities for families. This month, we have some really great activities in celebration of our new exhibit, Texas Festivals. We’re excited for people to come out, get a first look at the exhibit, and explore all three floors of Texas history,” Johnson stated.

The new exhibit itself is designed to be each enjoyable and significant.

“Texas Festivals is our latest exhibit—it just opened last weekend. The museum is turning 25 this year, and we wanted something that felt really fun and celebratory. What’s more fun than a festival? But we also found that festivals can teach you a lot about Texas history, communities, and what matters to them. This exhibit explores 27 festivals across Texas, which really represent the scope of what festivals can show us about the state,” Siefker stated.

Inside, guests will discover every thing from iconic competition traditions to distinctive artifacts that carry Texas tradition to life.

“We have the Watermelon Thump, the Strawberry Festival, and the Peach Jamboree. There are also amazing gowns from festivals like the Rose Festival, Citrus Festival, Buccaneer Days, and Fiesta San Antonio. We highlight cultural events like Wurstfest in New Braunfels, Oktoberfest in Addison, and the Kolache Festival in Caldwell. One of the most fun pieces is ‘Priscilla,’ a sculpture from Elgin’s Hogeye Festival—she’s a pig with a pearl necklace, crown, and red lipstick. We also have interactive elements for families, including a giant Texas-sized keyboard where you can enter your favorite festival,” Siefker stated.

And it’s not nearly what’s on show—there’s a full day of programming to get pleasure from.

“We’ll have Girlstart leading STEM activities throughout the day. At 10:30, the Austin Public Library will host a festival-themed storytime and craft.

Then at noon, the Austin Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a concert in the lobby called ‘Taking Flight,’ featuring music from Copland, Chopin, and Sousa. It’s very celebratory, and you can hear it throughout the museum as you explore,” Johnson stated.

H-E-B Free First Sunday gives free admission all day, with family-friendly actions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can discover the brand new exhibit and all that the museum has to supply for gratis.
