San Jose photographer Allan Barnes caught the shutterbug by staring out the home windows of the Grand River bus in Detroit.

“My mother would take us on shopping trips to Hudson’s, a large Detroit-based department store,” Barnes remembers in his artist’s assertion. “I would admire the architecture, which got older and more spectacular as we approached downtown. Seeing that it was beginning to vanish probably inspired me to learn the craft.”

Barnes, who shall be exhibiting his work at 1854 Almaden Road, studio 4, in San Jose through the remaining weekend of Silicon Valley Open Studios on May 16-17, says his “first decent body of work” was a portfolio of structure.
