What Did T&C Should Do with Linda McCartney’s Photography Profession?

She ended up marrying a Beatle, however Linda McCartney’s path—to Paul, to rock and roll, to a storied profession as a photographer—began with the Rolling Stones. And with Town & Country.

Sixty years in the past, a melange of serendipitous forces led to one of the iconic T&C covers in its 180 years of existence: the June 1966 subject, that includes a 16-year-old UES debutante named Alexandra Chace surrounded by her idols, the Rolling Stones. “As I dug deeper into the story of Wings in the ’70s, what gradually came into view for me was Linda’s role in all of it,” museum curator Andy Leach tells T&C. “Not just as Paul’s partner, but as a creative force in her own right. She was at the center of it all, and her influence on Wings is often underestimated. She supported Paul, anchored their family life, contributed to album artwork, and added to the band’s sound with her harmonies and keyboard playing. The camera is a symbol of that—not just her photography, but her overall presence within Wings.”

And be sure that to search for the monogram. “One of the most meaningful details about the camera is Linda’s personal inscription—it’s engraved with “L. Mc.,” which underscores how images was a part of her id,” Leach says. “In the exhibition, we’ve placed the camera on a kitchen table that recreates a scene from the McCartneys’ home on their farm in Scotland, surrounded by Linda’s photos of her family. It’s a domestic setting we can all relate to, and it highlights how intertwined the McCartneys’ personal and creative lives were.”
