Whether you are headed to the pool or seaside this summer season, water security begins lengthy earlier than kids truly get close to the water.

That’s why Alligator Steps Swim School in Clayton teamed up with first responders to show kids tips on how to keep secure round one of many main causes of unintended deaths.

Drowning is a number one reason for unintentional injury-related loss of life in kids ages 1-4 and the second highest for kids between the ages of 5 and 14 throughout the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

In North Carolina, the state sees about 1.2 drowning deaths per 100,000 individuals.

“Drowning is still the cause of unintentional death of children ages 1-2,” stated Larissa Koerschner with Alligator Steps. “It’s shocking. We’re in 2026, and that’s still the case.”

The occasion ran from 3 p.m. to five p.m. on Saturday and was free to the general public.

“They rotate through five different water safety stations, where they get hands-on exposure,” Koerschner stated. “Each instruction is teaching something different.”

The Clayton Fire Department partnered with the swim faculty and was on-site, giving households an opportunity to discover a hearth truck up shut and study correct life jacket use and water-related security practices.

Jay Dailey, whose kids have been on the occasion, stated his kids joined in on the enjoyable on Saturday to remain secure tomorrow.
