‘Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng On Surviving & Thriving In Trump Period

On the primary Crew Call of Emmy season, The Daily Show information group member Ronny Chieng shares with us the right way to survive and thrive throughout President Donald Trump 2.0, particularly when the information cycle can change on a dime near airtime.

In quick there are not any taboos, however as Chieng shares, “We take great pains to not give out misinformation and not take things out of context to the point where I think we kill jokes all the time. We kill entire clips if we feel like, ‘Hey, this isn’t a good representation of what this person is saying.’ We pride ourselves on that to be honest, on not taking people out of context, and making sure what we’re making fun of is factually accurate.”

But simply because it’s Trump, and simply because POTUS can generally not take a joke, that hasn’t put up guardrails at The Daily Show.

“Our only guiding light is can we make this funny,” Chieng tells Deadline’s Crew Call.

Chieng shares with us his rise from being a stand-up in undergraduate legislation faculty in Australia, watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Show (“I illegally downloaded it in my dorm room”) to being found by Trevor Noah, who would develop into The Daily Show host from 2015-2022 (“He stuck his neck out to hire me”).
