Swim instructors urge early water security coaching for younger youngsters

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Drowning is the main reason behind unintended dying for youngsters below 4, and licensed swim teacher Kym Cragel says mother and father can not afford to attend to start water security coaching.

“The sooner the safer because children again they are very attracted to water,” stated Cragel, a licensed Infant Swimming Resource teacher.

Cragel teaches youngsters as younger as six months outdated how one can survive within the water. But she warns a toddler who appears comfy round water might be at larger threat.

“A comfortable child in the water is even more dangerous. Because then they have no fear. They’re comfortable on the water. Mom and dad have been holding them or they’ve been in a flotation device, which gives them kind of a sense of security that’s false,” Cragel stated.

Cragel is working with eight-month-old Mylan Bacon, educating him how one can float. His mom, MacKenzie Bacon, says the household spends summers close to the water. With Mylan now cellular, she wished him ready.

“He is attracted just like any child or infant to bodies of water. So we just wanted to make sure that it was another tool he had in his toolbox,” Bacon stated.

Cragel says drowning seems to be nothing like what seems on tv. It occurs quick and silently.

“Children that fall into the water and don’t have the skills are going to stay under the water. It’s not like on TV or the movies when they resurface and they’re shouting and screaming. They actually do not come back up. So they’re under the water, they don’t know to hold their breath. They take the water and it goes right into their lungs and that’s when tragedy can occur,” Cragel stated.

Cragel emphasised the significance of supervision, notably heading into the vacation weekend.

“Be safe this weekend — constant supervision. If your child is going to use a flotation device, that is not a babysitter, not to fail safe. It has to be constant adult supervision,” she stated.

“When you think everyone’s watching the pool, nobody is watching the pool,” Cragel stated.

Cragel gives lessons year-round.
