Journey to Italy and Algeria in these two good, translated mysteries

I’ve all the time beloved thriller novels that take me inside completely different cultures. These have the revelatory tang you get when novelists know their tradition from the within.

As it occurs, two terrific novels of this sort have simply come out from Bitter Lemon Press, a small London writer that makes a speciality of translated mysteries. These new books might hardly be much less alike, apart from one factor: Each is, in its unconventional means, fairly good.

The End of the Sahara is a kaleidoscopic homicide thriller by the Algerian author Saïd Khatibi, a rising star who simply received the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. Superbly translated by Alexander E. Elinson, the e-book’s set in a provincial metropolis on the sting of the Sahara in 1988 Algeria, a troubled time when the ruling socialist authorities has clearly failed. Witty, erudite and socially astute, they play with the thriller style as they discover the various sides of Italianness.

The place is the Gualdana, a pine-protected seaside enclave the place the well-off have vacation villas. “A certain air of secrecy hangs over it,” the opening tells us enticingly.

The time is winter, when just a few residents are round. They’re an assortment of Italian varieties that features a wealthy, disaffected Roman couple; a philandering rely who’s arrived together with his newest conquest, a fame-hungry mannequin; an outdated girl hooked on studying Tarot playing cards; and a smug politician stewing in paranoia. The query unleashes the sleuthing instincts of their neighbor, Signor Monforti, a pessimistic depressive who’s a born detective: He spends his life scrutinizing each single factor for clues to impending catastrophe.

Masters of the sunshine incredible, Fruttero and Lucentini roll out their thriller with the slyest of touches, weaving discussions of the Greek cynics and the character of despair into their droll evocation of a grey, chilly low season resort with its wind storms and dire pizzerias. If Khatibi exhibits us characters caught within the tragic flames of historical past, Fruttero and Lucentini take a look at human folly with a cool, virtually historical amusement at what unusual, humorous creatures all of us are.
