At the time, there was only a small cabin on the land together with utility poles and chain-link fences that wanted to be cleared to ensure that the Sutherlands to construct their dream compound. There have been additionally layers of rocks that wanted to be excavated and, in line with their contractors, exported.

“I said, ‘We’re not exporting anything,’” Mark Sutherland recalled. “We hired an excavator that was there for six months, and we dry stacked the rock around the 4 acres, so there’s an 8-foot-tall wall around the property.”

Behind these rock partitions is a serene property set inside the Los Padres National Forest. Mountains, together with Chief Peak, present a dramatic pure backdrop to the house. In reality, that they had the house inbuilt a manner that the peak of the doorways and home windows wouldn’t reduce off any of the view corridors, Mark Sutherland mentioned.

Completed in 2014, the middle of the property is a 4,324-square-foot, single-story primary home that’s constructed within the late architect Howard Backen’s Napa Valley type. Much like Backen’s Napa properties, the primary residing space of the Sutherlands’ home is an open-plan nice room with 20-foot ceilings that encompasses a front room, a eating space and a kitchen. Large glass doorways pocket away to open the house as much as the outside, the place there are patios, a 70-foot pool and a eating pavilion with a built-in barbecue.

Originally, the primary residence solely had one bed room.

“When we designed it, we didn’t want guests in the house. We have two guest houses, so at nighttime, they were to leave and go back to their little house,” Mark Sutherland mentioned. “That’s practical for our use, but it’s not practical for a future buyer.”

But they’re not going to say goodbye to California eternally—they plan to purchase a smaller property in Ojai for once they’re not out at sea.
